Did you know, your environment can play a big role in developing new and healthy habits? It’s true, the people and places you are surrounded by can either make or break you from living a healthier lifestyle. If you do really want to take your nutrition and exercise to the next level, then managing your environment is one thing you should definitely focus on to make sure you start and remain on the healthy track! 

You are increasing your chances for successful lifestyle change when you manage your environment and observe potential pitfalls, including the influence of other people. Here are some of the suggestions that may help you to manage your environment better:

  • Surround yourself with those who inspire, motivate and support you. 
  • Be around positive energy, whether from people, places or things. 
  • Keep problem food (unhealthy food) out of sight.
  • Avoid walking by vending machines, if possible.
  • Eat healthy foods in a structured meal plan. You won't be as hungry, which will help you manage cravings.
  • Wait 10 minutes. Distract yourself with an activity — whether it's filing your nails, working on a crossword, or cleaning out the junk drawer. The craving may pass (really!).
  • Try healthy swaps, such as baked rather than regular chips, dark chocolate for milk chocolate, protein bars rather than chocolate bars and fruits instead of sweets. 
  • If you are meeting up with friends or family, perhaps eat beforehand or get a head start and look up the menu for the restaurant you are going to and plan what you will eat. 
  • If you are going to a beach house/chalet, go grocery shopping beforehand to make sure you have healthy snacks and food available. 

Managing your environment is the key to success.
